Am I really pregnant?

Pregnancy tests are usually very accurate and can be purchased over the counter at any drug store. A false negative result from a UPT means that, even though the UPT shows that you are NOT pregnant, you actually ARE. A false positive result from a urine pregnancy test means that, even though the UPT shows that you ARE pregnant, you actually ARE NOT. This is an extremely rare occurrence. There are only a few unusual circumstances in which this can occur.

Generally speaking, UPTs are accurate about 99% of the time, meaning that out of every 100 women, one woman is likely to obtain an incorrect result. This is typically due to human error and not the test itself. The pregnancy hormone (hCG), the hormone a UPT screens for, takes time to build up to levels that the test can detect. Thus, false negatives are common when a UTP is performed too early. The best way to know for sure is to be tested by a medical professional. A signed pregnancy verification from a medical clinic is required to proceed with any medical care related to pregnancy, and is also required if applying for Medi-Cal. Pregnancy Care Clinic provides these services free of charge.
